What is Freesat Sri Lanka? - Everything you must know about Freesat Sri Lanka

Freesat Sri Lanka is a subscription-free Digital Satellite TV service offering local and international television channels for Sri Lankan households. Nowadays it's a trending topic on social media because their service is awesome. Let's Talk About Freesat.

Digital TV History in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has been using analog TV for over 40 years. But because of Sri Lanka's topography, not everyone can get clear views from this. Because of this issue, A Company Called "Communiq Broadband Networks (CBN)" started a project to provide a satellite tv service called "CBN SAT". It is the 1st digital tv service in Sri Lanka. After that, the Dialog Axiata Company brought that company for 523.8 Million LKR. This is the turning point of the Srilankan satellite tv industry. They started a satellite tv project called Dialog TV. Dialog is a multi National Company so they have many resources. Their marketing is pretty Good. after 3 or 5 years everyone knows about dialog tv in Sri Lanka. After some years Sri Lankan popular Telecommunication provider called "Sri Lanka Telecom" Started a cable TV Project with ADSL AND Fiber. It's good that Dialog TV. Because the quality of the tv channels is very good. But the disadvantage of these two digital tv services is their installation prices are very high and monthly rentals very high. As an example, Dialog TV's minimum monthly rental is 490 LKR. Peo Tv monthly rentals start with 590/= LKR. So it cants affordable for some Srilankan people. so they are still using analog TV technology. Another very bad thing is they are charged for Free to Air (FTA) Channels and local free channels too. it is unethical. But people can't do anything about this. Big companies had spread their dominance in Sri Lanka. But turning all this upside down, The Freesat Sri Lanka was introduced this year(2022). It's very useful for watching clear tv without any monthly rental.

Freesat Sri Lanka Owners

According to the Consumer Affairs Authority, "Union Network International Pvt Ltd" is the Owning Company of the Freesat Sri Lanka. It is a Government registered company with Registered Company No: PV 00203126. And their address is 20 Nelson Place, Colombo 6. They have said their company is a licensed Digital Television Broadcasting Service by the Ministry of Mass Media & Telecommunication Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka. We have checked it and it's true. As I heard about this company investor, he has invested trillions of LKR for this service. So we can't tell, this will close after a short period.

As i know Freesat CEO (Chief Executive Officer) is Mr. Kaminda Samarakoon. And Mr. Hiran Jaliya works as the head of marketing. And Also he is the founder of Hitz 99 TV Channel which is on channel 99 in Freesat Sri Lanka. It is an FTA Channel for south Asia. We will talk about the all channels below.

What is Freesat? Q/A

Q. What is Freesat?
A. Freesat is a Television Network that provides digital television coverage to the whole of Sri Lanka via satellite using DVB-S2X technology.

Q. Is this really free?
A. Yes. This is a 100% free service for viewers. Although not yet available in Sri Lanka, the network that successfully provides Free TV, which can be seen in many countries around the world, is very popular. (England - Freesat, India - Freedish)

Q. What channels are there in this?
A. Freesat is a network that mainly provides Sri Lankan channels for free to the audience using Digital technology. So it's mainly local channels. In addition, a certain amount of foreign channels that are not Pay-TV are also provided through this.

Q. Even though it is free, will you ever have to pay?
A. Never. This is a 100% free service every day.

Q. Do I have to buy a kit to receive?
A. Yes. Like other Digital TV services, you need to get a receiver set to get this service. It will soon be available from dealers across the island.

Q. Can we install the kit ourselves?
A. Fixing this is not a complicated process. But it is important to get the help of a professional installer to get a high quality service.

Q. Can this be viewed on the Free-to-Air STBs we currently have?
A. Although Freesat is free to the audience, it is not a Free-to-Air service. We call this Free-to-View. That means the service is encrypted. Therefore, a separate STB should be purchased for this purpose. The main reason for this is that according to the copyrights of most of the content broadcasted on the channels we broadcast, it is prohibited to go outside the borders of Sri Lanka. Because the satellite signal extends throughout the region, the service must be encrypted according to the above law.

Q. If you buy this, won't you need Pay-TV?
A. If your need is to watch all the local channels and the foreign channels provided by this for free with Digital technology without paying any monthly fees, then it is not necessary. But if you want to watch Pay-TV channels like Discovery, National Geographic, you have to get that service from an organization that provides that service.

Q. How is Freesat better than Digital Terrestrial TV?
A. Terrestrial Broadcasting is a very difficult process in a country with a lot of topography like Sri Lanka. This is something we are already experiencing very clearly. There are many places that are not visible due to this topography, even the currently functioning Analog Television. This is why broadcasting through satellite, which is an extra terrestrial relay, is more practical. It can provide equal Digital TV coverage to every home in Sri Lanka. And due to the limitations and discrepancies in the electrical frequencies, it is very difficult to provide high-quality HD and 4K quality services through Terrestrial, and Freesat is ahead in all these aspects.

Q. Can I be a sales representative or installer?
A. Freesat has invited applications to appoint representatives for 160 service coverage areas covering the entire island. If you are also interested in this, have experience in distribution / installation of Satellite TV, CCTV, etc., apply today through https://freesat.lk/apply.
